Abstract

Our study uses the ArcGIS Network Analyst to examine at the service areas of fire halls in certain municipalities in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. We examine how population density in Census Dissemination Blocks and the projected population increase in 2041 will affect these service areas with the current fire hall locations. Our goal of this project is to examine the current service area (with 2011 population) and how it might change in 2041.

The results of our analysis show that the service areas will be significantly reduced in 2041 due to population increase in all of the municipalities in our study area. Our analysis also shows that the municipalities that experience the most reduction in service area extent are also those that will have the highest population growth. We conclude that by 2041, a significant number of people will live outside of the four-minute service area in several municipalities and that in order to mitigate this, these municipalities will have to find a way to maintain this essential service to those in need.
